THROUGH THE SONORA DESERT

Between Cactus and a beautiful sky, we will cross the desert to reach Puerto Peñasco, walk in the Dunes in the Great Altar Desert and a sacred culmination in the  archaeological site of La Proveedora.

DAY 01. DEPARTURE FROM HERMOSILLO - MAGDALENA DE KINO MAGICAL VILLAGE

Departure at 07:00 hours from the meeting point (Plaza Hidalgo in the center of Hermosillo Sonora), for flights arriving before 07:15 hours include transfer from the Hermosillo airport to the meeting point.

A 2-hour drive north of Hermosillo is the magical town of Magdalena de Kino, where the remains of one of the most important evangelizers in history, Father Kino, are found. This Jesuit was the only one capable of establishing permanent towns in the Sonoran Desert, you will learn about this important character in history, it is a stop in the central square to continue heading to the old town in Caborca and an option for free food is offered. Between cacti and a beautiful sky, you will cross the desert to reach Rocky Point.

DAY 02. GREAT ALTAR DESERT IN THE MORNING

Breakfast at the hotel.  First thing in the morning we leave for the Gran Desierto de Altar, just 15 minutes from Puerto Peñasco. A stop is made to acquire provisions because there are no restaurants in the reserve. This Desert is the largest dune system in North America, some of the dunes  measure up to 200 meters high. You can take a walk, visit the Schuk Toak museum that has valuable information to understand the importance of   having this natural heritage in Sonora territory, it is also the largest self-sustaining public building in Mexico.

After noon you will visit the volcanic area of El Pinacate, one of the most  impressive natural formations in the world in the most beautiful desert. The great biosphere reserve of “El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar” is a unique ecosystem on a planetary level. In its impressive landscapes there are more than 10 large craters and 400 lava flows. Violent explosions and rivers of lava left their mark on the impressive volcanic shield in the middle of the Sonoran Desert and next to the dunes of the Great Altar Desert. Several stops are made to observe different natural formations, among which the impressive “El Elegante” crater and the Cerro Colorado crater stand out, with a very particular beauty due to its shape and color.

DAY 03. LA PROVEEDORA ARCHAEOLOGICAL ZONE

Check out around 08:00 horas. (After breakfast). La Proveedora is one of the most important and least known archaeological areas in Mexico, on the slopes of the hills near Caborca the ancient inhabitants of the desert carved an endless number of glyphs engraved in stone. This sacred site consists of more than 6,000 petroglyphs who’s meaning still remains a mystery but which represent an unmatched heritage in our country. It is an archaeological zone guarded by the community of Caborca, whose visit requires prior reservation. Once visiting this site, after noon we continue the transfer towards Hermosillo. Between 2 and 3 p.m. We take time for free lunch and continue heading to Hermosillo. Arrival in the capital of Sonora is between 5 and 6 in the afternoon, so if someone flies to their place of origin this day, it must be on flights after 8 p.m.
