QUIAHUIXTLAN CEMPOALA AND LA ANTIGUA, THE ROUTE OF CORTES FROM VERACRUZ

We leave towards the north of the state, approximately 75 km from the port. We will arrive at the Archaeological Zone of Quiahuiztlan “A place where the rain rises in the heights”, meaning its name. At the Hill of the Metates, we will find vestiges of the most beautiful pre-hispanic cemetery in the Totonaca world, in addition, there are remains of pyramids and a ball game where you can see a splendid panoramic view of the beaches of Villa Rica in the Gulf of Mexico.

After visiting Quiahuiztlan we will arrive at Cempoala place of “twenty waters”, a name given for being surrounded by rivers of the region, in addition to being one of the most important archaeological zones of the state and the Totonaca culture. We will see the main buildings, such as the Temple of the Chichimecas, and The Circle of the Gladiators, among other pyramidal bases.

Then, we will continue towards La Antigua, a small town framed by huge and leafy trees on the banks of the Huitzilapan River, where we can find the legacies of the Spanish conquest, such as the Casa del Cabildo, the Ermita del Rosario, the first Catholic church in Mexico, and La casa de Cortes. After enjoying this environment and walking through the suspension bridge, we will return to the city of Veracruz or Boca del Rio.
