QUIAHUIXTLAN CEMPOALA AND LA ANTIGUA, THE ROUTE OF CORTES FROM VERACRUZ

Heading towards the north of the state, about 75 kilometres from the port, we arrive at the archaeological site of Quiahuiztlan, “the place where the rain rises in the heights”. On the Metates Hill we find the remains of the most beautiful pre-Hispanic cemetery in the Totonaca world. There are also remains of pyramids and a ball game, from where you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the beaches of Villa Rica, on the Gulf of Mexico. After visiting Quiahuiztlan, we arrive at Cempoala, “place of the twenty waters”, a name that derives from the fact that it is surrounded by the rivers of the region. This is one of the most important archaeological sites in the state and of the Totonaca culture. There we will be able to see the most important buildings, such as the Temple of the Chimneys, the Circle of the Gladiators, and other pyramidal foundations.
We then continue on to Antigua, a small town framed by giant leafy trees on the banks of the Huitzilapan River, also known as the River of Hummingbirds. Here we will find remains of the Spanish conquest, such as the Casa del Cabildo, the Ermita del Rosario, the first Catholic church in Mexico, and the Casa de Cortés. After enjoying the surroundings and walking along the suspension bridge, we will return to the city of Veracruz or Boca del Río.
