Guanajuato, the most important mining city in colonial times, is today a multicolored cultural center full of young university students, famous for hosting the Cervantino International Festival and one of the most important educational institutions in the country: the University of Guanajuato. The city played a fundamental role in the first stage of Mexico’s Independence when the insurgents defeated the Spaniards in the Alhóndiga de Granaditas.
