TAJIN AND PAPANTLA FROM VERACRUZ

A trip to the north of the state along the Gulf of Mexico Highway, through the Costa Esmeralda, enjoying the scenery of beaches, orange and banana plantations, sugar cane and cattle ranches. We find the most important pre-Hispanic city of the Totonaca culture in Mesoamerica: El Tajin, “Place of Thunder”. In an area of around 12 hectares, there are 168 buildings that make up one of the most important political and religious centres of this pre-Hispanic culture. We can admire 41 buildings, among which the majestic Pyramid of the Niches and the Plaza de Arrollo stand out. It is the pre-Hispanic city with the greatest number of ball games, 17 in all. We can also enjoy the ceremony of the Voladores de Papantla, with free time to buy handicrafts and souvenirs. We will then head to the town of Papantla, famous for the Voladores de Papantla ritual and the production of aromatic vanilla. Because of its ancestral traditions and folklore, Papantla is also known as Mexico’s Magic City. There we will be able to see the colourful costumes of its communities and get suggestions on how to enjoy its gastronomy.
