CHICHÉN ITZÁ AND THE GATEWAY TO THE UNDERWORLD

Leaving Merida, we will head to one of the new seven wonders of the world: Chichen Itza, whose name means “mouth of the well of the water sorcerers”. This was the most important city between 900 and 1300 AD, noted for its imposing ceremonial architecture. Among its main structures are the Temple of Kukulkan, also known as “El Castillo”, the Temple of the Warriors, the Ball Game, the astronomical observatory and the complex of Las Monjas, all of them a reflection of the great ceremonial character with which the city was managed. After the visit to the archaeological site, we will have lunch at a restaurant in the modern Mayan village of Pisté. At the end of the visit, we will go to the “door to the Mayan underworld”, a cenote near the town, where we will have the opportunity to refresh ourselves in its crystalline waters.
