Breakfast. November 1st is a very important day throughout Mexico, but the most beautiful setting can be found on Janitzio Island. A Purépecha legend says that when souls die, they fly like monarch butterflies over an enchanted lake to Janitzio Island, and you only need to open your heart so that, when crossing by boat, you can see the souls drawn between the waters of Lake Pátzcuaro. The island is lit up with candles and altars for the dead. These altars are erected over the graves, and on them we can observe the very essence of our deceased loved ones, as they contain, among other things, photographs of our relatives so that they know which offering is theirs and, upon their return to the world of the living, they can come and taste the delicious dishes they loved in life. We are the ones who place their favorite foods on the altars, as well as objects they used or that characterized them.
